Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre Presents the World Premiere of
A Bela e a Fera ou A ferida grande demais
At Boston Court Performing Arts Center’s DuoFest!
Pasadena, CA (June 27, 2017)— The Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre (HDDT) will bring its innovative and expressive dance artistry to the world premiere of “A Bela e a Fera ou A ferida grande demais” at Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena, CA. The performance premieres on DuoFest’s opening night, Saturday, July 8th at 8pm. Duckler’s newest and most spell-binding work features HDDT star company dancer, Teresa Barcelo, and noted saxophonist, Joe Berry (M83).
Based on the Portuguese short story “A Bela e a Fera ou A ferida grande demais” written by Clarice Lispector, Duckler’s piece explores the abandonment and ultimate dependency of Lispector’s characters on each other. While confusion and mistrust build through accidental circumstance, and the backdrop of social class further divides, Lispector’s characters also find brief moments of mutual connection. On stage, literal and figurative doors close and pry open with comic and often strange, uncomfortable gaps.
Lispector is considered by many to be the most important Jewish writer since Kafka, and the context around this short story, published after her untimely death at the age of 57, further contributes to Duckler’s inspiration. Set to original music composed by Berry along with a recording of the story narrated by Paula Rebelo (Star of Sarah Ruhl’s The Clean House and 2015 Ovation Award winner), “A Bela e a Fera ou A ferida grande demais” will bring to life the intimate portrayal of a fairy tale trope set as interior conflict with self.
An encore performance will take place on Friday, July 14 at 8pm.
